The Geological Society of America's magazine GSA Today published an open source article on the impact of social media, specifically blogging on assisting women in accessing role models. You can read it here.
I found this article very interesting for two reasons. First, I have not found blogs to be particularly helpful in finding other geologist role models, mostly because I feel like the types of problems I experience are not often represented in academic blogs. The emphasis instead is placed on science, which I believe should be best addressed through reading peer reviewed journals. Maybe I am not reading the right blogs? I also think that I find it more useful to talk about my academic life within the confines of academia. We have a group that informally meets to discuss the issues of academia, which is far more useful because I can guide the conversation toward things I specifically need addressed. I also think I avoid blogs on academic issues/life because I don't like to bring my emotions about my work home. I need space, both physical and mental, from the graduate school process.
The more important reason for why I bring this study up, however, is that I would love to see a similar study done on military blogging. I find that I could agree with almost every single word of the article if you substituted military spouse for geoscientist. I do not think I would be able to successfully navigate military life, though I hate that term, were it not for other military bloggers and social networks. This is how I find out about programs that may help our family. It's how I gain perspective when I feel down and out about: another freakin' move, the pay is messed up...again, I want to stay in bed and eat ice cream because deployment sucks, etc... The humor and honesty of military blogs by military spouses helps me cope and reinforces that my life experiences while different are not so far outside the norm as to be considered atypical. So if there is a sociology type who would like to do a survey like this, I think it would be really interesting and useful.
