Some days I feel utterly incompetent. These days are usually tied to when I take enough time to sleep. Something about having slept makes me utterly unable to perform simple tasks.
Both yesterday and today I managed to spill coffee down the front of myself. Talk about a drinking problem. Caffeine is supposed to go in you, not on you. Thankfully I was wearing lab clothes, so they were already stained and had holes in them.
After that, today, I was filtering some very clay rich hot spring waters so I can send them out for elemental analysis. The filters get clogged by the clay particles, meaning you have to apply pretty significant force to the syringe when you are filtering samples. Every once in a while, the pressure blows the filter off and splatters your sample all over everything. This usually occurs right after you take the time to change your bench paper, staining it's pristine goodness. This happened 2x today. Thank god I am a safety aficionado or I totally would have had it in my eyes, my mouth and on my hands. Not that there's anything dangerous in the solution, but who wants to clean up red clay from their face and hands?
The good news is that if these samples work out well and provide the data I need, I can start writing the 3rd chapter of my dissertation and I will only have one more lab experiment to run. Of course that doesn't mean the game won't change again and I won't have more to do. If I manage to swing the gig in Turkey, there will be a lot of new lab work to do before July, but that would all be background for my postdoctoral position (potentially).
The light is beginning to show up at the end of the tunnel every once in a while. It's fleeting, but it's there. I still have a lot of work to do to get there and of course, if I decide the Assistant Professor route, there will be at least 5-10 more years like the last 4.
Despite my coffee debacle, the truth is that I am hitting my stride here. I love my research assistant position. I love doing lab work and finally having things start to come together. Now if my personal life could get in step with my professional life, I'd be rockin' it like nobody's business.

I am so glad your lab work is coming together! And yes... everything else needs to get in line. But happy you're sharing your exploding lab samples and coffee spills with us!
