Milspouse Friday Fill-in: I almost finished the spare room edition...

Research, hubby visit and travel have kept me pretty busy lately, so I haven't been able to participate in the fill-in, but in honor of only having to hang the curtains in the spare room before being finished, I thought I would take a moment.

1. Are you a different person than you were five years ago? submitted by Sisterly Thoughts
Oh, hell yes! Five years ago I was working in Norfolk. Senior Jefe was coming back from deployment and we went through a really awkward reintegration period. I had a breast reduction. I felt like my whole life had been sold to the Navy for far less than it was worth. I was pretty frustrated with it, because I had plans for myself and they weren't going anywhere. Now I am much happier. I am finishing my PhD and hope to get some great publications out of it. Senior Jefe is finding what he really wants out of life. I can do all kinds of things sans giant breasts. Life is good. I feel optimistic. I also realize that there are all kinds of thinks I wish I had known when the turnip truck for the Navy pulled up and picked me up that would have made my life a lot easier.

The important thing to note is that sometimes our paths are not linear, but that doesn't mean we aren't heading in the right direction as long as we hold fast to our goals, or at least that's what I have taken away from it.

2. If you could go on Amazing Race, who would you take with you as your partner and why? submitted by Thoughts from a Poekitten
Gosh, this is a toughie. The obvious choice would be Senior Jefe, because he and I know each other well and work well together. He can also talk almost anyone into doing almost anything, which would be useful if we needed to get something done quickly.

However, I think I would actually take my friend "The Godfather". He, like Senior Jefe can talk people into almost anything, but he also can engineer a solution to any problem. That would be a great asset.

3. Does Facebook or Twitter actually bring more stress or good in to your life? submitted by Just an Arizona Girl

Most of the people I follow on Twitter are scientists and so there isn't that much drama to be had. On FB, I occasionally mix it up with people on MSM's page who write pretty hateful, ignorant comments about each other or anyone trying to help our community they don't like, or anyone who is just different from them. I think it is important to remember that what you say can be used against you, so even if you despise someone, it generally pays to be respectful about it. Almost all of my comments are variations on that theme.

And as for picking on other milspouses, well aren't we all on the same team? It's just not cool and if I could stop that one thing on MSM's page, I'd be a lot happier. I was picked on a lot when I first married my husband and part of the reason I still keep myself at arms length most of the time is because being picked on was so awful, especially when I had no family or friends nearby to rely on. We all need to do better in this area, because the words we speak/put to paper (or internet) can really hurt someone who may already be hurting or worse, on the edge.

4. June is National Soul Food Month- what’s your soul food? submitted by NH Girl Displaced
In the summer: Bing Cherries. I could live off them, seriously. They are the best comfort food. Year-round: spaghetti. I could literally eat it every day. This may be why my garden carries everything you need to make a good pot of spaghetti.

5.  If you could live in any other era than the current, which one would it be & why? submitted by Sugar in My Grits
I think I would like to rub shoulders with the people of the Enlightenment. Granted, I would prefer to be a wealthy dude back then, otherwise there wouldn't be much rubbing shoulders. I would love to chat with great scientists and be engaged in the process of science during this time. I would love to talk to the first geologists and see the first geologic map. I would love to go to the salons and hear the philosophers. I would love to chat with Thomas Jefferson and watch the birth of this Nation. It was an amazing and revolutionary time and I would love to see it all.
